R v SS
Ann Mulligan and Beth Crocker secured the unanimous acquittal of their client (‘S’) charged with a 20 million pound land fraud following a 3 month trial at Southwark Crown Court. S was alleged to have been one of three conspirators who bought up worthless land and sold it onto members of the public with promises of huge rates of return. The three were accused of using sales brokers in Southern Spain to peddle dishonest sales pitches in an attempt to distance themselves from the lies told.
The ‘scam’ attracted media interest at the time following a Sky News undercover documentary designed to expose the company’s alleged dishonest practices. The company was raided and closed down by Trading Standards in June 2012.
