Beth represented a client accused of blackmail and possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. It was alleged that her client had considerable influence over a vulnerable man to whom he dealt drugs. He was alleged to have engaged in threatening behaviour that culminated in inviting the male to his home where he held the firearm to the man’s head while demanding the repayment of a drug debt.
Her client’s defence was that he had agreed to store the drugs and firearm belonging to the other man for a fee. The allegations were entirely fabricated for the purpose of avoiding payments owed.
The jury unanimously acquitted Beth’s client.
The case involved pre-recorded cross examination pursuant to section 28 Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999.
