Beth’s client, T, was charged with strangulation and causing grievous bodily harm to his girlfriend. She presented with a fractured cheek bone in 2 places, severely
swollen eyes and a number of other marks to her face and body. She alleged that
the defendant snapped and repeatedly beat her over a 3 hour period whilst
effectively holding her captive.
T asserted that they had argued about breaking up. When he last saw her she was
uninjured. She must have injured herself or had someone else do it to then blame
him. The defence were pro-active in seeking T’s telephone from an early stage of the
proceedings. Careful analysis of his telephone data, her social media accounts and
Beth’s cross-examination of her undermined her account.
The jury unanimously acquitted T of all charges within an hour.
