Charles Evans, instructed by Monica Oluwole of the CPS, prosecutes a case in which an individual was charged with an attempted jewellery raid at Claridge’s Hotel.
The defendant arrived at the hotel on a motorcycle, released two smoke grenades in the hotel, and targeted a display cabinet with items worth over £190k with a sledgehammer. Although access to the cabinet had been achieved, the defendant was not able to make his escape thanks to the brave efforts of hotel employees, despite the thick layer of smoke.
Sentencing this matter brought together complex issues, as the ‘victim’ in the offence is a world-renowned hotel, which led to the impact of its guests and its ability to function as a business to the fore.
Thanks to a well-constructed prosecution case by all of those involved, the defendant received 9 years imprisonment, which was reduced to 6 years due to his early guilty plea.
