Kyri Argyropoulos led by Icah Peart KC and instructed by Kunle Balogun of Achom & Partners, secured the unanimous acquittal of Q, a teenage boy, on charges of murder and possession of a lock-knife.
Q was part of a group of teenage boys who attended a party in Highbury Fields where another teenage boy received a fatal stab wound within minutes of their arrival. The majority wore balaclavas or facemasks. Q was one of 7 defendants in the trial that spanned 4 months. Q was seen running away from the scene on CCTV shortly after the stabbing together with another boy who was convicted of the murder. Q then left the area on public transport with that other boy which was captured on CCTV.
Although the murder weapon was never found, a knife with Q’s fingerprint was found close to the scene of the fatal stabbing. Q was seen on CCTV in close proximity to where this knife was found and Q alone was charged with its possession. Although it was not the murder weapon, the prosecution alleged that Q was in possession of it at the time of the murder and that this showed that Q was part of a joint enterprise to use knives to cause severe harm. Q was unanimously acquitted on all counts.
