Sophie joined Chambers as a tenant in April 2024 following successful completion of Pupillage within Chambers. She regularly defends in the Crown, Magistrates and Youth Courts
Prior to joining Chambers, Sophie worked at the Financial Conduct Authority as a paralegal in the Retail and Regulatory Investigations division within the Enforcement and Market Oversight Department. Here she assisted in conducting forensic investigations into suspected misconduct by firms and individuals. Such investigations were both regulatory and criminal in nature. Some examples include an alleged large-scale, high-value pension scam by an un-regulated individual and an alleged breach of anti-money laundering regulations by a high street bank.
Sophie previously worked at as a paralegal in a busy criminal defence and youth crime department of a solicitor’s firm, where she was responsible for providing comprehensive support to solicitors and advocates. In this role, Sophie gained valuable insight into litigation and the legal aid system which she brings to her practice, along with impeccable client care skills.
Sophie has been described by those who instruct her as “meticulous in her approach”, “a pleasure to work with”, “very professional and a great communicator”. They are impressed by her Court manner and fortitude.
Notable Cases
R v T – Southampton Magistrates’ Court [2023]: secured the acquittal of D charged with 2 counts of assault by beating of security guards, thus avoiding a significant sentence.
R v G – Croydon Crown Court [2024]: secured a suspended sentence for D who pleaded guilty on a basis to PWITS class A relatively late in proceedings.
R v W – Maidstone Crown Court [2024]: persuaded the Judge to activate only part of Ds suspended sentence. The sentence was reduced by 8 months.
R v Q – Guildford Youth Court [2024]: secured the acquittal of a youth charged with RA ABH and malicious communications. D was 16 years old and of previous good character.
R v O – Bexley Magistrates Court [2024]: secured acquittal of D charged with a single charge of TWOC, preserving his good character.
