Notable cases
R v S & ors – Isleworth Crown Court [2024]: secured an acquittal in a multi-handed street robbery case following an eight day trial.
R v M – Reading Crown Court [2024]: secured an acquittal of a client charged with fraud. The case involved reviewing a vast amount of evidence relating to the client’s employment. The client was alleged to have defrauded his place of employment of approximately £30,000.00 by processing multiple daily refunds to allow him to take cash from the till.
R v F – Woolwich Crown Court [2024]: secured an acquittal of a client charged with possession with intent to supply after he was found with a large number of individual wraps of cocaine and a quantity of cash on him. The case involved cross examination of a drug expert witness who conceded there was no other evidence in the case that pointed towards possession with intent to supply, and the wraps could be consistent with personal use if purchased in bulk.
R v D – Portsmouth Crown Court [2024]: successfully argued the defence of reasonable excuse in a case involving possession of a bladed article. The client’s case was that he used the bladed article for work, and subsequently forgot it was in his pocket when he attended the police station on unrelated matters. The client was acquitted following a 2 day trial.
R v J – Chichester Crown Court [2024]: secured an acquittal of a client charged with intentional strangulation, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and criminal damage despite his previous convictions for violence being placed before the jury. The complainant was carefully cross-examined to reveal inconsistencies in her account
R v M – Highbury Corner Magistrates Court [2024]: secured the acquittal of a client charged with common assault. The Court accepted the client’s defence of self-defence, despite being the one to attend the complainant’s property.
R v S – Willesden Magistrates Court [2024]: successfully argued that a psychiatric report was admissible for use at trial as it went to the subjective limb of the test for self-defence.
R v H – Bromley Magistrates Court [2024]: secured the acquittal of a vulnerable client charged with criminal damage, threatening another with an offensive weapon and common assault.
R v G – Reading Magistrates Court [2023]: persuaded the Crown Prosecution Service to offer no evidence on a charge of going equipped by pointing out the weaknesses in the Crown’s case, the circumstantial evidence, and the likelihood of a half-time submission. The defendant was subsequently released from custody.
R v M – Stevenage Magistrates Court [2023]: successfully argued that it would be unjust to activate a suspended sentence by highlighting the client’s engagement with probation, his mental health issues, and his personal circumstances. The defendant had entered a guilty plea to an offence committed during the operational period of the suspended sentence order, therefore putting him in breach.
