Notable cases

R v G – Reading Magistrates Court [2023]: persuaded the Crown Prosecution Service to offer no evidence on a charge of going equipped by pointing out the weaknesses in the Crown’s case, the circumstantial evidence, and the likelihood of a half-time submission. The defendant was subsequently released from custody.

R v M – Stevenage Magistrates Court [2023]: successfully argued that it would be unjust to activate a suspended sentence by highlighting the client’s engagement with probation, his mental health issues, and his personal circumstances. The defendant had entered a guilty plea to an offence committed during the operational period of the suspended sentence order, therefore putting him in breach.

R v M – Highbury Corner Magistrates Court [2024]: secured the acquittal of a client charged with common assault. The Court accepted the client’s defence of self-defence, despite being the one to attend the complainant’s property.

R v S – Willesden Magistrates Court [2024]: successfully argued that a psychiatric report was admissible for use at trial as it went to the subjective limb of the test for self-defence.

R v H – Bromley Magistrates Court [2024]: secured the acquittal of a vulnerable client charged with criminal damage, threatening another with an offensive weapon and common assault.
